Blu-ray recordables (BD-R) and Blu-ray rewritables (BD-RE) are the current standards for both high capacity burning (up to 50GB) and high definition playback. Blu-ray's biggest advantage over DVD is maximum storage capacity, beating DVD recordable's largest capacity disc by more than 5 times. This is due to the type of laser Blu-ray recordable drives use, which is blue-violet in color, and allows for data to be packed more tightly in less space.
Currently there are four types of Blu-ray media:
BD-R 25GB - single layer, write once
BD-R DL 50GB - double/dual layer, write once
BD-RE 25GB - single layer, rewritable
BD-RE DL 50GB - double/dual layer, rewritable
The soon to be released 100GB disc will be available in 2011.
