CD/DVD Burners Buying Guide - Part1

With CD and DVD burners, it is possible to easily copy, edit, export, and import video, audio, and data files. A number of manufacturers are in the market now, each selling a high-quality burner with virtually similar features. To help you make the best decision on what CD/DVD burner is right for you, we’ve put together a brief, two-part buyers’ guide.

What is the difference between a CD and DVD burner?

First, it’s important to know that CD burners will play and create CDs, while DVD burners are more advanced and may burn and play both CDs and DVDs. Both CD and DVD burners read and burn discs with a laser, although each burner type use different disc types to perform the read/write function. A DVD burner can read CD-ROMs and read/write data on CD-R blank media discs and blank DVD discs (+R and — R). CD burners and DVD burners can additionally read and write data on rewritable discs, as well.

In what formats are CD and DVD burners available?

  • CD and DVD+
  • CD and DVD-

Today, all CD and DVD burners are capable of supporting [+], [-], and RAM formats.

How does burner speed influence quality?

Ultimately, slower burning produces fewer errors.

The drive speed is usually indicated by drive's X rating and is measured by the actual data transfer rate of a disc. The fastest recording capability on DVD+R and DVD-R is 22X; the fastest writing speed on DVD+RW and DVD-RW is 8X; and the fastest reading speed is 16X. The CD-R and CD-RW writing speed is 32X, the reading speed is 32X for CD-Rom and CD-R, though 32X for CD-RW is considered better. It's ironic that there is no DVD media rated to burn any faster than 16X.

Blank Media offers CD/DVD burners with maximum writing speed of 22X for DVD-R & DVD+R, 12X writing speed for DVD-R DL (dual layer), and + R DL (double layer). We also offer writing speed 32X for CD-R and CD-RW, reading speed 32X for CD-Rom and CD-R, and 24X for CD-RW.
